A liner is a graver that cuts several lines at one pass. They were used for "shading" which adds the impression of depth to a design. Some of the imported trade locks show the use of liners in the engraving but use by American gunsmith generally dates very late in the 18th century.

The grand rifle by John Sheets illustrated in Volume V of JHAT has liner decoration around some of the screw heads.
